Brief History
The GTI began operations in May of 1951 in temporary accommodation in the Queen’s College compound. By July of the said year it was removed to its present location. The original purpose of the institution was to provide training in craft skills but by July 1956, Technician level courses were introduced and by September 1961, Diploma level programmes were included, bringing the total number of courses offered to thirty eight. Courses are conducted on Full Time, Day-Release and Evening basis.
Aims and Objectives
- To offer education and training in Technical, scientific and commercial fields of students to young people and adults. To structure and organize programmes consistent with the needs of industry as well as in keeping with national goals.
- To provide work attachment opportunities for trainees.
- To facilitate extended opportunities for persons to gain knowledge and skills through open access and other means.
- To provide opportunities and experiences that promote the development of self as well as that of the nation.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must be at least fifteen (15) years to attend day courses and eighteen (18) years and older to attend Evening or Day- Release courses.
For Craft Courses, applicants must have successfully completed the Secondary Competency Certificate Programme Part 11 (Advance); or have a sound foundation in general education up to the Grade 11.
For all other courses applicants must possess at least four (4) subjects CAPE or CSEC as noted below.
Technician Certificate Courses
Maths, English A, Physics and any technical subject. Applicants with work experience, and person who have gained at least a credit in a comparable Craft Course may be considered eligible for entry.
Technician Diploma Courses
Engineering Courses: Maths, English A, Physics or Chemistry and any other Technical subject.
Science Courses: Maths, English A, Chemistry and any other Science subject.
Land Surveying Course: Math, English A or B, Ge-ography, Physics or Int. Science.
Computer Science Courses: Mathematics, English A, Information Technology or EDPM and any other subject.
Commerce Courses: Math, English A, and any two business subject.
Applicant applying for evening programmes must have a minimum two years relevant working experience.
Guyana Technical Education Examination
This examination is the culmination of all training offered at the Institute. Exam fees are payable after the submission of the examination forms. Successful students are accredited with a Certificate or a Diploma.
Competency Based Education
An educational system that emphasizes the specifications, learning and demonstration of those competencies (knowledge, skills, behaviours) that are of central importance to a given task, activity or career.
Competency Based Education Training (CBET)
CBET is a modern strategy used for the delivery of training internationally. It provides for students/trainees to:
- know what they have to learn in advance;
- Know how they will be assessed;
- Be the focus of the learning experiences;;
- Appreciate that both theoretical knowledge and practical skills are valued;
- Progress at their own pace;
- Recognize learning as an individual experience
- Know how well they are doing at all times.
Promotional Conditions
Student, that are pursuing courses other than those listed under Level 1 & II Competency Based Education Courses, will be required to satisfy the following conditions before they are considered for promotion
Achieve:
- At least a minimum of eighty percent (80%) of the possible attendance for each subject .
- A minimum of fifty (50%) of the possible examination marks for each subject of the course.
- A minimum of (60%) of the possible coursework grades for each subject.
- Along with the above a minimum of forty-five percent (45%) grade on the overall assessment.
Work Attachment
Work attachment is an integral part of the Institute’s curricula and as such, all first year full-time students will be required to complete a six week period of work attachment in industry/commerce as a requirement to be awarded a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
Registration Fees
All students will be required to pay an annual registration fee for contingency purposes and Students’ Guild membership. This fee is payable at the time of enrollment.
Student Activities
Students are involved in games and competitive sports on Friday afternoons and Bible Club activities twice weekly.
The Students’ Guild is responsible for the entire affairs of the student body and makes suggestions/recommendations to administration on miscellaneous issues.
